Dear Allan,

maybe your SIMMs are not fast enough for the 40 MHz of your new
accelerator. SIMMs rated at 70ns should work perfectly, 80ns might be fast
enough but anything slower certainly would explain system crashes.

Does it slow down a localtalk network (5-6 computers) if all
of the machines do not have the same version of appletalk
installed? What is the easiest way to find out what version
of appletalk you have installed?

Is it a good idea to have the latest version from apple.com
installed on your computers? Does the appletalk version have
anything to do with the internal ethernet on quadras?

If there is a better forum for these questions, would someone
please let me know and point me in the right direction.

One more on different subject: can someone tell me what the
difference is (technically) between the black & white vs. the
color grayscale in the print dialog box?

Subject: Another LCIII Freeze problem

I've purchased two LCIII's this year (one at work, one at home).
Both run Sys. 7.1  and are configured nearly identically.
The one at work is subject to freezing up when I click
on the application menu (far right of menu bar).  Not all the time.
Usually when I have critical, unsaved information in some
window.  I haven't fully diagnosed this situation but it *is*
a nuisance.  Of course, there are about two dozen INITs loading,
any one of which could be the guilty party. That means testing
with 2^24 different configurations to find it!

BTW, I *don't* use Word 5.1 so that is not the problem.
Most often it happens, it is when there are, maybem 4 or five
applications open.  Also, if I click somewhere else in the menu
bar, say on the FILE menu, and slide the mouse over to the
application menu, the problem doesn't happen.  Just learning
a new mousing technique.  Document it and it becomes a feature.

Anyone with insight or a contact with Nancy's astrologer,
please contact me.

Usually this sort of thing is attributed to stellar flares
on the distant surface of Alpha Centauri.  Since the freezing
is, however, uncorrelated with the orbital phase of Mercury,
only those with significant terrestrial explanations are
encouraged to reply.

The Macs in my Dept hook up to the network via AppleTalk.  I've learned how
to create a Mac volume on the network's HD (by typing the Unix command `man
AUFS'; AUFS = AppleTalk file protocol UNIX File Server).  This was not hard.
Now I can call up this volume and place it on my Desktop, indeed very nice.
My problem is, it seems that whenever I copy any file onto this AUFS volume,
the original created/modified date/time changes to the _current_ date/time.
My question is, how do I remedy this so that the date/time is not changed?
I'd like to use SyncIt! to backup some of my files (from my PB) to the AUFS
volume, but I can't because the created/modifed dates/times are
changed :-(   Thanks.

There are two (maybe 3) companies you may want to speak with.  Farralon
has a PC or Windows product that provides a full AppleTalk stack for
PC's, a company named Cooperative Printing (or something like that -
they use the nickname COPS) has a similar product  and I think Apple
has a product that will do this (or they've just repackaged the
Farralon stuff).

It is supposed to be able to be done.  Good luck,

I think I opened a can of worms with my comments.

There was a response from Steven T. Jones stating that I was totaly wrong
in my opinion about change.  Well it is MY opinion.

Yes I will agree that all change is not good.  Change is like luck.
Some is good and some is bad and some is not understood.

Someone that is new to the net and the archive will find something new
and exciting that they have never seen before.  They will adapt
to the way the directory structure is and will have fits of rage
just like we did when the structure is changed.

In my opinion change is relatively good. If things around me don't change
I make them change.  I do not like things to stay just like they are
and I most certanly do not like the slow and steady path for everything.

One major question I would have for those who prefer not to change much
is: Are you still using system 6 and Microsoft word 3.0?

Why would you upgrade your software and not the way you get it.

Personaly I would like to see all of the aliased names in the
archive changed to the real directory name.  At least you
could put the links in a directory all by them selves and
if you want to use one you can go the the link dir.

I would like to thank Mr. Jones for his comments and offer him
the chance to continue the discussion over E-Mail.

Personally I do not like the new changes. I think that
mac.archive.umich.edu is better orgranized, and they have more stuff.

I often go to info-mac archives first, as there are a very fast site in
Sweden. But if I can not find what I need there, I use a mirror of umich in
Switzerland or U.K.

One thing I have started to do when getting files from info-mac is to
always have a ftp session running under unix too. This allows me to locate
files using 'dir */apple*' to find all files starting with apple. This is
usually much faster than to look in 3 directories to find the stuff. umich
has things much better organized, so here this is not necesary.

I also wants to have new entries listed in the digest. It is one of the
reasons I subscribe to it (I have news access too). ALternative would be to
make another mailing list, like the one at umich, which once in a while
mails you alist of new entries with a description.

french.7.0.1 etc) but seems like that Chinese system software is not there.

I find that the Desktop DB and DF on my Macintosh SE/30 need to be rebuilt
very
frequently, about every 2nd or 3rd reboot.  Since the problem is sort of
intermiitent, and occurs after hours of use, I have been unable to track it
down by putting inits, applications, offline.  The problem occurs on an
external PLI/88 drive with the latest driver (PLI 3.9) that has three
partitiions, and it always occurs on the same partition.  My internal drive
and
the other two PLI partitions are unaffected.  I am running System 7.1 with
Hardware Update 2 and 32 bit enabler, SpaceSaver 1.05, DiskExpress II 2.2,
Disinfectant 3.2, ATM 3.0, VersaTerm Pro 3.6.3, MacTCP 1.1.1, ATRA 1, Timbuktu
5.0.2, MenuChoice 1.6.  When the Desktop DB and DF go bad, I have to make them
visible with ResEdit and trash them, ordinary rebuild does not work. Has
anyone
run into such a recurring problem before or have any idea what might be
causing
it?  (The PLI drive is a removeable SYQUEST).  Also, running QuickKeys 2.1.3,
Conflict Catcher 1.3.2, VersaTerm FTP server 1.1, MountImage 1.2beta2, SCSI
Probe 3.5, Pyro 4.0.1, other components of Stuffit Deluxe 3.0.6 besides
Spacesaver, CEIAC 2.0, CEToolbox 1.6.5, Daymaker 2.0.3. Any experiences or
educated guesses as to the problem would be appreciated.  If your speculations

drive from DGR Technologies.  MacUser reviewed MO drives recently and gave
the DGR line a top rating.  Do any Info-mac readers have first-hand
experience with the 256, and if so, can you tell me if they are reliable,
and do they really read and write 128 mb cartridges?

There is nothing like the OED but it does end up costing close to a $1000.00.
I know of atleast on publisher (Random House) that is including a free CD-ROM
in their new edition of the Unabridged Random House Dict. (due out later this
year), it may be worth waiting to check it out. My guess is other book(dict)
publishers will probably follow suit and there will be a better variety of
dict. available soon.

For those who use or plan to use an external monitor with their Power Book

I Found the following bug with Microsoft Word 5.0 when using an external
monitor with my Power Book 180:

After connecting a 17" color monitor to my PB180 I set the Monitor Control
Panel such that the PB180 sscreen is the primary monitor and the color monitor
is secondary. This is achieved by moving (leaving) the menue field into the
PB180 screen symbol.

I also set the PowerBook Screen CP (don't know what the exact name is for a US
system since I am using a German system) such that the external monitor
mirroring capability is turned off.

Booting the PB180 will give you a setup where the menue is on the PB180 and
the color monitor screen remains empty until you move an object from the PB180
screen over to the color monitor (I believe this is the default setup when you
boot your PB180 after connecting an external monitor).

If I open now a normal Word document on the PB180, and move its window from
the PB180 screen over to the color screen everything is fine so far. Now I am
scrolling the text in that window up and again down. Parts of the text which
momentarily dissappeared due to the scrolling will change the color of the
characters when they return back into the window. The color may be a light red
or yellow or even white which makes the characters invisible. The lines are
all there but just not visible. If you now move the whole window such that a
portion of it protrudes into the PB180 screen all characters change their
color back to black.

If you select the external monitor to be the primary display everithing works
fine.

I discussed this problem with Microsoft on Compuserve. They finally confirmed
the bug and wrote a problem report.

Subject: Feedback on my Mac!

Okay, if anyone can explain this puppy they get a gold star on their
forehead.

A couple minutes ago, my LCIII began to emit what was clearly a
'feedback' sound, very shrill and piercing. Moving my hand around the
(attached) microphone adjusted the pitch and level of the sound, so it
was clearly feedback.

I quickly turned the mac's volume to 0, to no effect. The sound continued
to come from the mac's speaker.

I was doing nothing with the microphone; no sound-recording programs or
anything even vaguely similar was running.

I stopped it by raising the mac's volume back up, which produced the usual
system beep. The beep cut off the feedback.

In the time I've been typing this note it's happened twice more and I
know the event that triggers it: an extension called "Obnoxious" that
sounds out a Daffy Duck yell at random every few minutes. Whenever the
sound plays, feedback kicks in.

BUT: I've had Obnoxious running for several years on this system and
previous ones. I've NEVER had this feedback problem before. And the sound
had played several times this morning already before the time that the
feedback occurred.

There it goes again. Daffy Duck yells and the feedback starts. Making the
system beep (or, I presume, any other sound) kills it.

The solution, of course, is obvious: unplug the microphone (since if Daffy
can set it off, maybe other sounds can too). Does anyone have any ideas
about this? It's definitely the most bizarre thing I've run across.

The volume level on the mac is set to about 4 I think, not terribly loud or
anything. And the feedback continues even when I change the volume to 0.

Comments, anyone?

Fontographer 4.0 is one of the buggiest commercial releases I've seen in a
long
time.  My favorite is the bug where you hit command-s and it reboots your
computer, irrevocably trashing your save file and (recoverably, with Norton's)
trashing your hard disk.

I have not been able to get any response from Altsys, satisfactory or
otherwise.

At the moment, my only suggestion is to STAY AWAY!

I have tried from 6  am - 2 am EST to try to reach Gopher
sumex-aim.stanford.edu only to find the server is busy.  Anonymous FTP is also
busy at the same location all times of day?  Are your lines down, or has it
become overly popular of late?  BTW have you considered this overwhelming
demand possibly occurs due to the fact you now can't see the new postings of
the archive in the digest, and have to search for the new postings of the
archive, at the archive itself?  It used to be one could read the digest
Comp.sys.mac.digest through UUnet to find out the new archive (ftp
sumex-aim...) files on a daily basis.  Now I have to search through the
archive to try to find the new postings.  WUarchive has also been too busy to
access of late.  Please send me a copy of EasyView 2.33 to
[e-mail] where I have enough space for file downloads (let me
know the size of EasyView with that copy).  Any correspondance other than
files should be sent to the VAX address.  Thank you.

I'm having no problems with Gatekeeper 1.2.8 on my IIvx running System 7.1

HOWEVER... one of our users has had a report from several of HIS users that
they're experiencing exactly the same problem you describe (System "attacking"
Finder with a SetResAttr CODE 18) on a IIci (System 7.0.1), as well as Pluses,
Classics and SEs.  They also have some LC II's and SE/30's which don't (at
present!) exhibit the problem.

Any further info would be most welcome!

Has anyone mailed Gatekeeper's author, Chris Johnson, yet?

mins with the GeoPort.

Subject: GhostScript/HPDeskwriter question

Hello all!

    Boy, I hope this isn't a really stupid question, but I'm a bit
confused right now. (*embarrassed grin*) I needed a way to print PostScript
files (generated at work) on my HP Deskwriter at home, and a friend suggested
using Ghostscript (aka MacGS).  I've downloaded the files (version 2.5.2b2)
and am able to display lots of PS files (both self-generated, and example .PS
files) but when I select Print or the Preview option on Print from the MacGS
menu, I always get a blank screen/page.  I've turned off all the extensions,
as well as virtual memory. MacGS is running with 5 Meg of memory allocated to
it.  I think that *ought* to be enough.  The Deskwriter is running in
non-background, serial mode with version 4.0 of the HPDeskwriter drivers.

    The printer works just fine with other applications, so I think that
the problem is with the way I'm using GhostScript.

    Any suggestions anyone has out there are entirely welcome...I'm
pretty clueless right now.

I am looking to replace Cricket Graph v1.? (circa 1987-1988) with
something a bit more sophisticated. The program must be able to
to generate a respectable polar plot and possibly 3D x-y-z plots.
Also, I would like the program to allow the absolute size of the
to plot be specified. Currently, I am consider either SigmaPlot or
DeltaGraph. I have used a demo version of Kaliedagraph and I was
not particularly impressed by it.

OK, so I have created a quicktime movie from single frames,
but how can I add sound to it??
Using the recording tool creates a new movie with sound only --
copying and pasting from it inserts blank frames (with sound!)

I was wondering if people have been able to get ARA (v1.0) to work on
their C610 or any of the newer systems.  The problem I'm having is that
when I try to access the Remote Access Setup control panel from either
within the Remote Access app or the control panel folders itself, I get
a dialog box saying: "A Remote Access Setup error has occured.  No
description."  That's a pretty uninformative message.  I removed all the
non-standard INITs from my system folder, but the error message still
comes up.  Any advice is really appreciated.

Dear Netters,

I have a question that maybe a real stupid one, but here goes.
I want to create a simple network (AppleTalk) at home, I was hoping to
connect the Macintoshes using phoneNet, I know that i can use a Laserprinter

ImageWriter on this network. Any advice on how i would go about doing this

Dear Dave,
I suppose the driver-software by Jasmine isn't compatible with the 040
processor cache of your new Quadra. Jasmine is no longer in business so you
can't get a new version from them, but I remember having read about another
organization distributing a 040 compatible version of the (ex-)Jasmine
formatting software. Sorry I don't remember their name & address.

Anyway I *think* you can use any of the commercial products like
Silverlining by LaCie, HDT by FWB etc. in order to make your Jasmine disk
work with your Mac. Best thing is to backup all your data, format the drive
and restore the stuff but maybe just updating the driver on the harddisk
will work too (but it's a bit risky...).

It just shows how on top of it Apple can be!  Jasmine went out of business
several years ago.  (Wake up your tech support people, Apple! :-(  )
I have a Jasmine Direct Drive 45 running on a Quadra 700.  It formerly
ran on a Mac Plus.  The two Macs have different interleave factors, so
I had to reformat the drive (I use Silverlining) before it would work
on the Quadra.  I'm not sure that my solution was the only one.  There
may be a less drastic solution out there somewhere.

There are a couple of companies that repair and support Jasmine drives.

Another is:  Seagull Software, (415) 361 - 0928.
I have no personal experience with either company.

Hi all,

Many of you may have seen the advertisement in MacWarehouse for a $99
14,400 bps modem for Macintoshes.  I was quite skeptical about the viability
of the device, but when I read some of the articles on the net about it,
I decided to risk some money and buy one.  I just got it last night, and
despite it seeming too good to be true, it really is a nice piece of
hardware, provided your expectations are set properly.

First of all, what do you get?  You get:

1.  A Technology Concepts 14.4 Kbps modem (V.32bis with MNP 5)
2.  A power brick
3.  A telephone cable
4.  An appropriate hardware-handshake cable to connect to your
    Macintosh (miniDin-8 connector); this is important for running at
    speeds over 9600 baud because the Mac does not have the full array of
    modem control lines.  However, the connector on the back of the modem
    is a standard 25-pin D connector and does have all the modem control
    lines.  Therefore, if you want to use this modem on your IBM PC or
    workstation, it should work fine (and has appropriate configuration
    settings to permit it).  Note, however, that the defaults on this
    modem are for Macintosh handshaking.
5.  A Macintosh terminal emulator called MacKnowledge for accessing a
    variety of for-fee commercial on-line services.  They even give you
    preprogrammed scripts for signing up for them.  This includes the
    MacWarehouse BBoard as well as Compuserve, Genie, Dow Jones, etc.
6.  A package for accessing a commercial on-line weather
    service called AccuWeather.
7.  Apple Remote Access modem scripts for the modem
8.  A 1-800 support number to call if you have trouble.

What don't you get?

1.  Fax capability.  You can get this via an upgrade, but it is not
    included in the $99 package.  I glean from reading the documentation
    that this may simply be a different comm package on your Mac and may
    not require a change in ROMs.  However, I do not know this for a fact.
2.  A lot of documentation.  The manual is bare-bones, documenting only the
    Hayes commands it accepts and what their defaults are.  Even the S
    registers are undocumented, and must be inferred.  Presumably, if you need
    the information, you can get it from the 1-800 number.
3.  A 30-day money-back guarantee from MacWarehouse.  They will replace
    the unit if it is defective, but they won't just give you your money back,
    no questions asked.  The manufacturer (Technology Concepts, who I gather
    is has some relationship with Prometheus) does warrantee the unit
    for 3 years.

Bottom line: I suspect this seems to be a basic 14.4 data modem, built
with a Rockwell data pump chip with a case around it and some minimal
software to let you use it.  If you want to transfer data or use ARA,
you're in good shape.

I tested it last night by connecting into the BBN high-speed modems,
and it appears to be quite robust. I live out in Stow, and it was
raining, and those two factors tend to make my phone line a bit noisy.
I often used to see garbage characters through my MultiTech 2400, but
the Technology Concepts didn't generate one.

One cute thing about the MacKnowledge program:  you can tell it to
interrogate the modem and tell you what it is capable of.  It checked out
the TC modem, and set it up for 19,200 baud as the default, since it
detected 14.4 capability.

I was able to set up the Zmodem terminal program to use the modem by
increasing the dialing timeout to 60 seconds.  Although this modem
dials faster than my old one, it takes longer to perform its training
sequence (to determine the line quality and the highest possible speed to
use), and therefore needs about 30-35 seconds to complete the connection
with a 10 digit number.

Unfortunately, the machine I have an account on and our high speed
modem bank are separated by a LAN, so I haven't been able to measure
accurate Zmodem data transfer rates yet.  However, it happily connects
at 19,200 bps (DTE speed), with MNP 5 enabled for reliability, and
judging by the screen update rate, it really does 14,400 on the line.
I did connect up at 56,700 bps DTE speed, but that actually seemed to
slow down the system rather than speed it up.  I won't be able to
determine if that was due to flow control latency or some other effect
until I can get a direct connection to some system capable of sourcing
data at high speed.

I'll let you know more when I have more real data.  However, given the
price point and the capability of the little box, I though people might
like to hear some facts regarding its capabilities.

For several years, I have used installation disks such as the HP drivers, or
Network Software Installer over a network by creating a folder on an
Appleshare volume with EXACTLY the same name as the installation
disk, copying over the contents, and then double clicking the script on the
server. This would mount the folder as if it were the floppy disk and
install correctly.

With NSI 1.4 this does not work. It claims it cannot find the files it is
looking for. An exact copy of the Appleshare folder, when copied to a disk
of the same name does work. Is there something in the Installer script that
Apple wrote that now FORCES the folder to be a disk rather than a folder
on an Appleshare server? As I recollect the same happened with the recent
Harware updater, except that in a custom install some items would install,
others would not. In NSI 1.4, all the items appear crippled. Is this simply
slightly loose script programming or a more serious phenomenon?

I could not agree more. Is it really a lot of trouble to skip the items
with the [*]? For me, I read the list through the Columbia mirror site,
which updates the list daily, but takes a while to update the actual
mirror of files. I then end up having to connect to info-mac just to get
the file list.

Subject: Problem with Apple HD SC Setup

I recently purchased a Centrics 650 240/24M/CD.  I love it.
....great machine.  But I'm having trouble updating the driver
on my old hard drive.  The Apple HD SC Setup formatting and
partitioning utility that comes on the CD with the Centris
cannot "see" my old drive.  Yet it mounts correctly as a
secondary drive.  I even went so far as to disconnect the
internal 240 Meg in the Centris, because I thought that there
might be some quirk about only working with SCSI address zero.
Anyway all I get when my old drive is the only one on the
SCSI bus is a "No suitable drives were found" error.
SCSI Probe 3.1.1 sees and mounts the old drive perfectly as well.
The pesky drive is a MacLand Quantum 105LPS and is configured with
driver version 3.1 according to SCSI Probe.  Whereas the 240 Meg
Quantum in the Centris is running driver version 6.3 (whatever
those driver numbers mean).  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi everybody!
I am trying to set my Centris 610 to do backup on DAT drive connected
to VAX workstation. On VAXes ther is multinet RMTALLOC utility which
allows them to mount remote tape drives connected to other computers.
Is there anything simular for the Mac? I do have internet connection, but
i do not have pathworks, and backing up on VAX and and then transfer files
to DAT drive is not an option.

Subject: SCSI disk-mode and PBs (& neat TIP!)

A while ago, I asked about Apple's annoying tendency to permit the screen
of a PB being used as a hard drive for another computer (a.k.a. SCSI
disk-mode), to stay on continuously at a set level that was impossible
darken.

Well, got a few answers, and a few requests for information about what I
found out.

Specifically

1) The backlighting issue of the SCSI disk-mode'd PBs can not be addressed
without the use of some physical hardware hacking (i.e. turning the light
off mechanically)
2) The reason for #1 is that because of the way SCSI disk-mode is
implemented. It is the activation of the SCSI circuitry, and *only* the
SCSI circuitry (after a brief RAM startup test). Thus, there is no way for
the PB to load up the proper software to control the brightness (since
brightness is actually controlled by the software - despite there being a
physical control for it!). Thus, the PB's backlight goes on at it's default
level.
3) Keep the lid of the PB open while it is serving as a SCSI disk-mode hard
drive for another mac. This helps with the heat dissipation generated by
the PB.

TIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:

And finally, something related to SCSI disk-mode, but not quite...it is
actually, quite a neat trick I discovered!!

Given that the PB is essentially shutdown completely, except for the SCSI
disk drive and the backlight, I figured that I could possibly get the use
out of the keyboard on the PB since it is an ADB device. Well, I did that,
and plugged an ADB cable in (while both machines were turned off of course)
to the back of the PB. And voila! It worked! Not only did I get the use of
the keyboard, but the use of the trackball as well! Neat! Not so certain
about practicalities other than if I am accustomed to a certain layout of
the keyboard of the PB versus, say, the Standard Keyboard (where the ESC
and ` keys are switched around).

That's about it for now,

Canvas 3 can indeed select objects based on color (foreground,
background or both) and object type so that all blue text could
be selected. Selections can also be made based on other object
characteristics such as fill pattern, pen pattern and various other
line and pen characteristics.

Yes, Canvas can do it ("Selection..." under the "Edit" menu). You can
select objects based on object type, color, line thickness, fill pattern,
and so on. You can also select across layers, which can be very helpful at
times.

I have found out only one way to set the sharing privileges of the Desktop
Folder. To do that you set the desired settings in the "Sharing..." dialog
of the hard disk it resides on and set the "Make all currently enclosed
folders like this one" flag.

Unfortunately, that changes the access privileges of everything else, as
well. Of course you can change everything back to what it had been before
individually, but that's a great pain.

Does anyone know a better way for achieving this goal?

Greetings!

I need advice and recommendations.  I would like to set up a development
environment on my Mac. The requirements are two-fold:

    a)      C++ with debugging facilities (and browsers, if available)
        and perhaps some tools,  like make, for example,
    b)      X-windows development environment.

I need this because I am taking classes in OOP (with C++) and GUI interface
building class, where a device-independent GUI will be built. Even though we
were told that any platform may be used -- as long as some common primitives
are implemented -- I would prefer to learn X rather than MS-Windows or Mac
GUI while I am working on the class project.

Some time ago, I recall, I wanted to buy a C++ for my Mac so that I could
learn it on my own. I saw in a catalog Zortech C++ for approx. $200 or so. I
ordered it, but when it arrived, I realized that it did not include a
debugger or any other tools (including the mechanism for invoking the
compiler!). A helpful engineer from MacConnection explained that I needed
some other kind of environment to go with it (I don't remember exactly what,
some kind of Mac toolkit or workbench or whatever) and a debugger from
another company at a cost of additional $500+. Now that made this C++
compiler for casual exercises a major purchasing decision.

Right now, as I understand it, my alternatives are: (a) buy this $700+
environment for the Mac (expensive!), (b) buy PC (yak and expensive!) and get
Borland C++ (how to develop for X is still not clear), (c) use RS6000 at work
(extremely inconvenient). Is this still the state of affairs today or am I
missing the boat? I have always used my Mac with off-the-shelf tools, and
have little experience with software development on Mac platform.

If anyone is interested, I will make the summary of received advice
available.

Subject: Stylewriter II Driver on Stylewriter I

Hello net,

Somewhere I heard that it was possible to print on a Stylwriter I with a
Stylewriter II Driver. I have a Stylewriter II driver and when I try to
print on my Stylewriter I, the driver cannot find the printer. Is
there some sort of modification I must do in able to print this way? If
so, then what?

Hmmm. "Back to the Future"?

(sumex used to be flat. That is, the "old" sumex. TOPS-20 didn't have
directories, at least not in the sense that we think of them today - hmmm,
kinda like the macs of that era:-})

The answer is yes. Make sure all the machines have the system 7 print
drivers. (You can run laserwriter 8 too, but on older macs you need at
least System 6.0.5)

Subject: Word 5.1a bug in PB 180, Sys 7.1, w/external monitor

Anyone seen this one ?

On a PowerBook 180, with System 7.1, HW Update 2.0 & LW 8.0, and an
external Apple Color Monitor plugged in, was working in Word 5.1a.
Since I had both screens (the PB's and the external monitor), and was
editing two docs, decided to place one in each, and was working on the
external monitor (i.e., the menu bar and the active window were on the
monitor). Went out for a soft drink, during which the machine
decided to switch the screens off (configured to do so at 5 min.
inactivity).

When I returned and woke the thing up by toying with the trackball, the
PB display woke up ok, returning to the original image, but the external
monitor went nuts. Instead of returning the image of the document, it
displayed a jagged repetitive pattern (looked like a TV test pattern or so).
The cursor was nowhere to be found even after trying to get it over to the
PB display. Fortunately, keyboard was still alive, so I was able to quit
Word (saving changes). Only way to recover the machine was a shutdown, via
the switch. No damage was found on reboot, and this has (and had) never
happened again with other applications or the Finder.

Just another item for the gotchas list.

Subject: WordPerfect 5.1 to Mac conversion

Michael Conwell asks if it is possible to translate WordPerfect 5.1/PC
files to any Macintosh file format. Absolutely.

As always, there are TWO translations invovled: translating the PC file
>From a PC disk onto a Mac disk (medium conversion), and second,
translating the file itself into a format your word processor (WriteNow
or whatever) can read (file-format conversion). Apple's AFE "Aple File
Exchange" program can handle both tasks, so long as you have two things:

1. You need a SuperDrive (1.4mb disk drive). You didn't mention what kind
of Mac you are using, so I don't know whether you do or not.

2. In addition to AFE itself, you will want to get the translators for
WordPerfect to Mac. I believe these are available in Sumex; perhaps
somebody will post exactly where. Read the documentation that comes with
them: don't install more than one of the several translators that are
provided.

The first time you do it, it will seem a little mystifying. But actually
it's quite a straightforward process. If you could use the old Font/DA
mover, you can do this.

I am a graduate student in the field of Hydrology working on a
research project which involves the use of high resolution video
imaging technologies.  I am in the process of deciding which Mac to
buy to assist in video editing, animation, and production.  I have
investigated the new av models, and can't quite afford the quadra
model but need 24-bit video so the centris model seems to be
inappropriate.  My first impulse was to buy a centris 650 and a good
accelerated video board, but now with the new av's I'm somewhat
confused as to the best Mac to buy.  I also need ethernet, and lots of
storage.

Could someone in the know please e-mail me some suggestions on how to
proceed or at least give an idea of the options available?.
